HOMESTEAD EXCLUSION ORDINANCE (ACT 50)

The Allegheny County Homestead Exclusion excludes the first $18,000 of your assessed market value for county homeowners. In Moon Township the Homestead Exclusion is the first $15,000 of your assessed market value for homeowners. The Township also participates in this program for relief on municipal property taxes, though not all Allegheny County municipalities allow for this exclusion. In order to take advantage of this program, which is administered by the Allegheny County Office of Property Assessment, you must apply through that office. A link below has been provided for your convenience, and you can download an application through their Web site at www.alleghenycounty.us.

Applications must be received by the Allegheny County Office of Property Assessment by March 1 to be eligible for the reduction in the current tax year.

To qualify:

To determine if you already have an application on file with the County for Act 50 tax relief program, you can visit the Allegheny County Real Estate Web Site. The "General Information" tab for your property will show "YES" in the Homestead line on the left side of the web page if your application is on file. You will only have to apply once unless a change in status on the primary residence has occurred or a new deed is filed.
If you previously filed and qualified for the Act 50 Homestead/Farmstead Exclusion then you are automatically registered for Act 1, the Tax Relief Act of 2006.


TAX PAYER RELIEF ACT 1, (ACT 1 APPLIES TO SCHOOL TAXES ONLY)

The Property Tax Relief - Act 1 program was signed into Pennsylvania law in June 2006. The law has the potential to provide some property tax relief to resident homeowners & is based on Gambling Revenue. The amount of relief changes and varies for each tax year depending on the amount of revenue received by the state and distributed. A property owner must be approved and qualified for ACT 50, the homestead exemptions, (through Allegheny County) in order to receive ACT 1 school tax relief. If you have applied and qualified for ACT 50, then you will automatically receive any allowable ACT 1 reductions in your school tax bill.

ALLEGHENY COUNTY SENIOR CITIZEN PROPERTY TAX RELIEF PROGRAM- ACT 77

Allegheny County offers a senior citizen tax relief program. The program provides relief for Allegheny County Property Taxes and Moon Township Municipal Taxes.
(This program does not apply to school property taxes.)

The program gives 30% property tax reduction for Allegheny County taxes and 30% property tax reduction for Moon Township Municipal Taxes.


To qualify:

For the Moon Township, once your application is approved by the Allegheny County you are automatically approved for Moon Township's Senior Citizen Tax Relief Program.

Applications can be picked up at the Moon Township Property Tax Office located on the lower level of the Community Center, (Library Building). Or, contact Allegheny County Treasure John Weinstein at

DISABLED VETERANS AND WIDOW'S PROPERTY TAX RELIEF PROGRAM

Honorably Discharged Veterans that have a 100% service-connected disability can be exempt from payment of Real Property Taxes on their principal residence, and is based on financial need. Income level may not exceed $79,050 to be eligible for this program.

Widows of Honorably Discharged Wartime Veterans, who died of a service-connected disability (if the veteran would have been eligible for the exemption), may also be eligible for Real Property Tax Exemption on their principal residence, and is based on financial need. Income level may not exceed $79,050 to be eligible for this program.

This program is applied through the Veterans Affairs Office at Soldiers and Sailors Hall located in Oakland, Allegheny County. If you feel you qualify, an appointment must be set up through their office at 412-621-4357. During the interview process they will assist with the application process and file the application for you once the criteria have been met.
